Road to independence camps

Jyothirgamaya adopts a unique approach of reaching out to the blind at their place of residence, however in order to widen our outreach programme, and reach out to the blind in large numbers, and make the training accessible to them in their home towns, Jyothirgamaya has initiated a new pilot project called “Road to Independence” training camps. The objective behind conducting such training camps is to bring the blind out of their comfort zones for a short period of time, to provide them with a new atmosphere, which will enable them to explore their potential, learn new things, and develop their personalities.

We organize these short term camps at different parts of the state, with the help of local organizations and individuals who are interested. We mobilize our beneficiaries through word of mouth, contacting local organizations, radio, newspapers, and television. The camps entail intensive training in mobility, Braille, basic computer use, daily living skills if needed, and also personality development. We invite skilled and inspirational motivational speakers and life skill trainers to conduct personality development and life skill training sessions. We provide free food and accommodation during the camps. So far Jyothirgamaya has conducted two training camps one in Trivandrum, in April 2014, and one in Kochin in July 2014.They were both indeed very successful, and have evolved a new persona in many of the participants.
